Microsoft 365: Fundamentals (MS-900) Exam Prep Guide

This blog is part of a series. For more exam prep guides check back in the future

I’ve always liked and recommended Microsoft Fundamentals exams. Last year, before this new generation was created, I went back to gap fill my Office 365 MCSA with the Cloud, Mobility and Security Fundamental MTA’s (98-367, 368, 369). And even though these new generation MCF’s – like MTA’s – are optional (they don’t count towards the associate workloads) I don’t personally believe in bypassing them. No shortcuts. But Others may disagree. I respect that.

Microsoft 365 Fundamentals is the natural successor to the Cloud Fundamentals (98-369) MTA. It’s about understanding the components of Microsoft 365 and the concepts which underpin it. It’s about what those components are designed to do and how they can be deployed and managed. It’s also about SKU’s and Support offerings. Now – even with this last element – it would be a mistake to assume that this exam isn’t technical. Yes, it won’t go into the nuts and bolts of the workloads, but there is a lot of value of understanding broad concepts at a high level.

If you have never taken a fundamentals exam in the past, it’s typically around 45 minutes once past the regulations and usually has between 35 and 45 questions so you must think on your feet. In a few months’ time after the publication of this blog, there should be an official practice test and MOC courses available. It should also appear on Microsoft Learn and Pluralsight. The challenge here with the subject matter is that Microsoft exam descriptions now use may contain a lot so you can’t categorically state that something won’t crop up out of left field. Bear in mind that the MCF’s are also about broader concepts as opposed to very defined subject matter so it’s more than simply using for definitive articles. A combination of docs, the Microsoft product, licencing and trust websites, the Microsoft 365 Blog and the Microsoft 365 Partner site should be enough.
